History, Culture, Heritage

History reaches out from the ground to grab you by the ankle in Wraithmarsh – a mysterious, magical region in Albion’s wild North! Dismissed by the less discerning traveller as a haunted wasteland filled with half-buried horrors, the region once known as Bloodmoor actually offers the bold tourist a unique opportunity to engage with a vibrant local culture while really feeling the crushing weight of the past.

We hope you don’t mind getting your boots wet!

A Small Note on The Flood

Wraithmarsh was once Bloodmoor, “the Oakshire of the North”. But it wasn't always so. It took three Heroes, and the construction of a giant dam, known as the Sea Wall, to turn what was once an uninhabitable saltmarsh into Albion’s finest farmland.

Nothing’s built to last, though! We owe the Wraithmarsh of today to the “surprise rewilding” of Bloodmoor caused by the Sea Wall’s collapse.

Bloodmoor on a Budget

As budget holidays go, there are fewer places in Albion more suitable than Sodden Dorrit. Nestled in a somewhat fertile patch of Wraithmarsh, the people of this stubborn little town pride themselves on many things, such as their ability to cook just about any meal with cabbage. Notably, the town proudly shelters survivors from the lost villages of Underwall, Shepton-on-the Mound, and Newton Bywater. While heartbreakingly tragic, this means Sodden Dorrit really is the best place to stay in the local area!

And while the weather may not always be desirable (you may find yourself caught out in rain, fog, mist, and/or drizzle), there are many fun (and free!) ways to entertain yourself in and around the village.

Visitors are encouraged to undertake a game of “statue spotting” and track down the many bits and pieces of the once-great statues that stood atop the Sea Wall. But before striking out of town, it’d be prudent to pack a thick coat, a waterproof pair of shoes, and an up-to-date last will and testament.

Another budget-friendly excursion is to see the HMS Jubilee, one of the many incredible shipwrecks that, thanks to the Flood, now litter Wraithmarsh’s atmospheric landscape. Though there are many, many wrecks to be seen across the region, the Jubilee will delight and titillate Naval History buffs given its involvement in the most recent Blood and Bower War. Lucky tourists may even dig up a memento to take home to commemorate the trip.

(Please note it is illegal to remove human remains from Wraithmarsh.)

For any visitor with a little money to spend, there are a few shops and drinkeries available that will very, very happily take your cash. For those looking to stock the pantry, or thrill-seekers looking to risk a picnic on the wastes, we recommend Unperishables, which will provide everything you need. Otherwise, a drink at The Old Lamphouse is sure to be the highlight of your evening.

Go Large in Wraithmarsh

Those who’ve brought a bit more of a budget to Sodden Dorrit will find plenty of things to spend it on.

If you are looking for a little something special to commemorate your trip, High Fineries can provide you with an authentically salvaged keepsake, with a helpful side dish of riveting yarns from the establishment’s proprietor. But if you’d prefer a souvenir with some serious staying power, you can always procure yourself a tattoo from Wraithmarks.

That’s sort of it, really.

Unless, of course, you feel like buying the whole village! Budding landlords can pick up a two-bedroom shack in Wraithmarsh for less than the cost of a new hat in Bowerminster. That’s right, the bottom rung on the property ladder is lower than you think!
